Solar panels arrive at the Bassett Country Club site

Numerous boxes labeled with solar panels were delivered to the former Bassett County Club site on Oak Level Road in Bassett on Saturday.

The project was one of the first solar projects approved by Henry County and was requested by Green Acres Solar LLC.

The solar plant is listed with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as a 36-acre site that will produce 5 megawatts of electricity once operational. The building permit for the site has been in place since February 2021.

One megawatt of electricity is enough to supply light to approximately 1,000 households.

Other active permits for sites in Henry County that are not yet producing include a 180-acre, 20-megawatt site by Sunny Rock Solar at 2749 Joseph Martin Highway. This permit has been active since March 2023.

The City of Martinsville is involved in a solar site on the former Lynwood County Club golf course at 720 Dupont Road that is planned to produce 8 megawatts on 55 acres. The permit has been valid since May 2021 and the site is not yet producing.

According to DEQ, the two largest sites at the eastern end of Henry County produce electricity.

Sol Leatherwood Solar, LLC operates an active 20-megawatt site on 322 acres and Axton Solar produces a permitted 66-megawatt facility on 547 acres. Both facilities are located in Henry County and border Pittsylvania County.
