On the upcoming Ashes of Leviathan Tour, mastodon And Lamb Of God play their respective albums from 2004, Leviathan And Ashes of the wakein full length. In conversation with ABC Audio, singer/bassist of Mastodon Troy Sanders Stocks he expects to follow their set Leviathan Tracklist.

“The many fans who enjoy this record, who have fallen in love with it, or for whom it has become an important part of their musical past and present, I think would love to hear it from start to finish,” says Sanders.

This would of course mean that Mastodon would start the show with perhaps their most famous song, “Blood and Thunder,” the opening track of Leviathan. This presents a bit of a puzzle—or a Blood and Thunder puzzle, if you will—since Blood and Thunder has long been the standard conclusion to Mastodon.

Sanders muses that if Mastodon took a cue from a certain legendary metal band, they could still keep “Blood and Thunder” at the end of the set.

“We supported a run with Metallica when they did that (Black Album) in its entirety,” Sanders recalls. “But they went back to front and ended with ‘Enter Sandman.'”

We would also guess that no one in the audience would be mad if Mastodon played “Blood and Thunder” twice per show, once at the beginning and then again at the end. Sanders says that idea actually came up, and recalls hearing the country legend Willie Nelson pull off this exact move during a show.

“He started with ‘Whiskey River’ and ended the piece two and a half hours later with ‘Whiskey River,'” says Sander. “I thought that was pretty damn cool. I doubt we’ll do that, but it would be kind of fun.”

The Ashes of Leviathan tour kicks off on July 19th in Grand Prairie, Texas.
