Zane Smith earned his best finish in the NASCAR Cup Series to date at the Ally 400, crossing the finish line in second place, beating his previous best of 13th.
Smith took advantage of the various fuel strategies that surrounded him during the overtime finishes that helped several drivers succeed or fail in their races last night. When asked after the race how he handled the various attempts to achieve an overtime finish, Smith gave an honest answer:
“I have no idea. I’m proud of our strategy at the end with our group, but I had no idea how long we would last, especially because the guys behind us had four new tires.”
Smith went on to talk about the crazy restarts in Nashville and how he has experienced them time and time again throughout his career on the superspeedway:
“Nashville is notorious for crazy restarts; everything just floats up and I don’t know if it’s because it’s concrete or what. Of course the aggressiveness is always super high, but I just kept choosing the lower lane and kept going.
“It’s crazy how much better these cars run in clean air. It’s great to feel some of that because it’s brutal back there. We just need to put together more weekends like that.”
With this result, Smith now sits 34th in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, but he narrowly missed out on a guaranteed playoff spot as he was beaten at the finish line by Joey Logano’s No. 22.
