Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed explore love, loss and the afterlife

The trailer of the long-awaited series Barzakhstarring acclaimed Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, has been released. According to the makers, the six-part series blends magical realism with supernatural fantasy in a family reunion and promises an unforgettable story. The trailer, released on Monday, gives a sneak peek into the poignant journey of a 76-year-old man who shocks his estranged children and grandchildren by announcing his marriage to the ghost of his first true love. The series raises a question: “When everything has withered, will love remain?”

“This unconventional event sparks emotional revelations and confrontations as family members come together, unsure whether to celebrate or intervene. As seen in the trailer, Barzakh Intricately weaving folklore against the stunning backdrop of the Hunza Valley, The 40 Years of Love reveals a mystical world where everyone is connected. Amidst the turmoil, one haunting question remains: “When everything has withered, will love endure?” reads the official synopsis.

Barzakh Directed by Asim Abbasi, known as the director of Zindagi’s first Pakistani original Churails and the feature film CakePakistan’s entry for the 2019 Oscars.

Fawad has appeared in Bollywood films such as Khoobsurat (2014) and Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Barzakh reunites Fawad Khan not only with Sanam Saeed but also with Asim Abbasi after their 2018 family comedy-drama film Cake.

Sanam said that being a part of the series was an incredibly enriching experience for her. She said, “The premise of the show, which explores themes of family, love, loss and the afterlife, intrigued me from the beginning. As an actress, I am constantly looking for roles that challenge me and offer a new perspective on storytelling.” Barzakh does just that by presenting a narrative that crosses conventional boundaries and delves into the realms of the mystical and unknown.”

Sanam further said, “What I am most excited about is being back with such an outstanding actor like Fawad and sharing the screen with Salman Shahid, Sajid Hasan and the other Fawad (M. Fawad Khan), with whom I have worked closely in theatre.”

Barzakh is produced by Waqas Hassan and Shailja Kejriwal and stars Fawad Khan, Sanam Saeed, Salman Shahid, Eman Suleman, Khushhal Khan, Faiza Gillani, Anika Zulfikar and Franco Giusti. Barzakh was the only South Asian show to premiere at the 2023 Series Mania Festival in France.

The drama series will have its global premiere on July 19 on Zindagi’s YouTube and ZEE5.
