Former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson hosted an impromptu broadcast of the England game at Glastonbury

For football fans in Glastonbury, the timing of the round of 16 match between England and Slovakia this weekend was a bit of a mystery – the game was due to start yesterday at 5pm, but organisers decided not to broadcast it at Worthy Farm.

After the performance by legend Shania Twain, countless football fans retreated to shady corners to watch the game via pixelated live streams, but just below the Pyramid stage, boy band star turned indie musician Louis Tomlinson hosted an impromptu TV party.

The former One Directioner reportedly left the festival site earlier in the day to buy a large TV, generator and internet dongle from Argos. He told the Guardian that he had originally planned to set up the audience area backstage, but a poor Wi-Fi signal forced him to venture into the campsites.

Tomlinson watched the game with numerous festival-goers who joined the performance. Although Tomlinson sat discreetly at the front watching the game in an old English windbreaker, many further back in the growing crowd did not initially notice him and did not realize that the boy band singer was behind the stunt.

Audience safety officials discussed the screening with Tomlinson because they were concerned it would disrupt the main thoroughfare between the Pyramid and the dance-focused Silver Hayes festival site. However, a compromise was reached and the screening was moved to a different location, near a campsite.

Although England ultimately secured victory against Slovakia thanks to a late comeback and a last-minute equaliser from Jude Bellingham and a winner from Harry Kane in extra time, the atmosphere was tense and fans wondered if the Three Lions would pull it off.

When the final whistle sounded, the festival-goers were in a frenzy – one lucky fan even lit a torch.
