Alpena’s Michigan State Police Law Enforcement Career Academy is successful | News, Sports, Jobs

The academy, which has been successfully held three times in the south of the state at Monroe Community College, aims to give select participants ages 16 to 21 a comprehensive insight into careers in the criminal justice system.

Alpena’s first time hosting this event was thanks to Alpena Community College and local law enforcement joining forces to train the next generation of potential recruits.

The week-long event started with 18 participants, 16 of whom completed the program and graduated with certificates, including one for participation in the state police team driving program.

Jukanovich emphasized the camaraderie that developed among participants from different regions, from the Upper Peninsula to the south of the state.

“It was really rewarding to see them transform from strangers into a cohesive group through team-building exercises and classes,” Jukanovich said.

Throughout the event, participants work with professionals from various agencies and gain insight into various facets of law enforcement. They attend courses on criminal justice, forensics, evidence collection and defense tactics. In addition, practical exercises such as patrolling and first aid are offered to provide hands-on experience.

According to Jukanovich, the academy was more than just an introduction to law enforcement, as it provided hands-on exercises and scenarios that allowed participants to apply what they learned throughout the week.

“It was amazing to see how much information they absorbed and how well they performed,” Jukanovich said.

Jukanovich claims that the career academy is of great value as a recruiting tool. With several graduates now considering careers in law enforcement, she sees this academy as a promising new avenue for recruitment.

Jukanovich hopes to expand future academies by showcasing additional aspects of law enforcement, such as aviation and maritime services. She also wants to improve outreach to attract more participants.

Overall, the first vocational college in Alpena was considered a great success and paved the way for future events at both the local and statewide level.
