30.06.24 Tropical Update: Cat. 4 Beryl & TS Chris

Hurricane Beryl is an extremely dangerous and rare Category 4 hurricane for the month of June! Beryl will make landfall in the Leeward Islands on Monday morning. St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be the worst affected. The storm will maintain its strength as it moves across the Caribbean and eventually weaken once it passes over the Yucatan Peninsula. Beryl broke three records today:

  1. First major hurricane in June east of the Lesser Antilles
  2. Strongest June hurricane ever
  3. Earliest Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic

Since the warning was issued at 11 p.m., Tropical Depression Three has strengthened into Tropical Storm Chris, the third named storm of the season. Chris is located in the Bay of Campeche and is moving toward Mexico with 40 mph winds. Fortunately, Beryl will revert to a depression Monday morning once it is over land, and that will be the end of it.

In addition to Beryl and Chris, we have another disturbance with a high probability of formation: 40% in 2 days…70% in 7 days. This wave off the coast of Africa follows a similar path to Beryl and will unfortunately head toward the Lesser Antilles by mid-week. This will likely be our next tropical depression.
