Why some LGBTQ+ couples show their love with “II Most Wanted” by Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus

Why some LGBTQ+ couples show their love with “II Most Wanted” by Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus

Beyoncé’s eighth studio album, “Cowboy Carter,” released on March 29, has become a sensation. Among the songs is a love song that has been well received by the LGBTQ+ community.

Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus teamed up for “II Most Wanted,” the third single from “Cowboy Carter.” The duet peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Many interpret the sweet ballad as a tribute to friendship as portrayed in the 1991 crime drama “Thelma & Louise” starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon. Lyrics such as “I’ll be your shotgun rider/ ‘Til the day I die/ Smoke out the window flyin’/ Down the 405” seem reminiscent of the road-rage revenge film.

However, some same-sex couples have taken it from a different perspective – as a song about romantic love.

Couples showcase their relationships on TikTok while the chorus of “II Most Wanted” plays in the background.

On April 26, newlyweds Haley and Alisha Benson shared a video of their first dance with the caption, “Thank you for the perfect song, @Beyoncé and @Miley Cyrus.”

But the song “Cowboy Carter” was not their original selection.

Alisha Benson tells TODAY.com that she and her then-fiancé were listening to “Cowboy Carter” while packing for the wedding.

“(‘II Most Wanted’) came on and we both stopped what we were doing – packing for our wedding – and sat down to listen to it,” says Alisha Benson.

The couple changed their first dance song a week before their wedding in April.

“It feels like it’s about a couple who are a little bit rebellious. They’re going against mainstream society, both of them against the world,” says Alisha Benson. “I think for us and a lot of same-sex couples, that’s really relatable.”

One song lyric particularly touched Haley Benson.

“There was a part that said, ‘I didn’t know what I wanted until I saw your face/ I said goodbye to the old me,'” says Haley Benson.

“And I remember as our relationship progressed, I slowly realized, ‘Wow, I really love this person and I don’t want to live my life without them,'” she adds.

Broadway star Ben Platt and his fiancé, actor Noah Galvin, also added a romantic touch to the song. The pair performed together during Platt’s residency at the Palace Theatre, which ended on June 15.

At the May 31 show, Platt and Galvin sang a cover of “II Most Wanted.” May 31 also saw the release of Platt’s third studio album, “Honeymind,” which the actor and singer-songwriter said was inspired by Galvin.

“Without that person, there would be no album,” Platt said as Galvin joined him on stage.

During their duet, the couple held hands, swayed together and ended the performance with a kiss to the applause of the audience.

“The very special guest at the album release show at the Palace. I love you @noahegalvin. And we love you @mileycyrus and @beyonce. So much so that we stayed in your key,” Platt wrote under an Instagram post about the performance.

Everything about “II Most Wanted”

“II Most Wanted” was written by Cyrus more than two years ago, she said in an interview with W Magazine published on June 3.

She described working with Beyoncé as “a dream come true.”

“My mom always said, ‘I love this song so much,'” Cyrus said. “When Beyoncé contacted me about the music, I immediately thought of it because it really expresses our relationship.”

“I told her, ‘We don’t have to be country, we are country. We were country. You know, being from Texas and me from Tennessee, there’s so much of us in this song,'” she added.

On March 29, Cyrus celebrated the release of the duet on Instagram and expressed her appreciation for Beyoncé.

“I loved Beyoncé long before I had the opportunity to meet her (and) work with her,” Cyrus captioned the post. “My admiration is so much deeper now that I’ve worked with her. Thank you, Beyoncé. You are everything (and) more. I love you.”

Read the lyrics to “II Most Wanted”

I know we are a bit hasty, but we are both still young

One day we will no longer

I didn’t know what I wanted until I saw your face

Say goodbye to my old self

Came out of nowhere, gave no warning

Pedal as hard as the two most wanted

And I don’t know what you’re doing tonight

But I

I will be your co-driver

Until my death

Smoke flies out of the window

Down the 405

I’ll be your back seat, baby, and drive you crazy

Whenever you want

Woah, I’ll be your co-driver

Until the day I die

Making waves in the wind with my empty hand

My other hand on you

It’s been a while since I tried to withdraw

But it’s time for something new

Came out of nowhere, gave no warning

Pedal as hard as the two most wanted

And I don’t know what you’re doing tonight

But I

I will be your co-driver

Until my death

Smoke flies out of the window

Down the 405

Yeah, I’ll be your backseat, baby, and drive you crazy

Whenever you want, woah

I will be your co-driver

Until the day I die

(Until the day I, until the day I die)

Until my death

(Until the day I, until the day I die)

I know we are moving ahead and we are both still young

But one day we will no longer

I go wherever you take me, seems kind of crazy

Oh oh

I will be your co-driver

Until my death

We get high until we don’t notice it anymore

Time flies

Yeah, I’ll be your backseat, baby, I’ll drive you crazy

Whenever you want, oh, oh

I will be your co-driver

Until the day I die

(Until the day I, until the day I die)

Until my death

(Until the day I, until the day I die)

Mmm, oh
