“Inside Out 2” beats “Quiet Place” prequel, while “Horizon” flops

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 remained at the top of the domestic box office charts in its third weekend with a whopping $57.4 million, enough to scare off Paramount’s prequel A quiet place: day one after a closer race than expected.

Over and beyond, Inside Out 2 celebrates crossing the $1 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales in a record time for an animated film, 19 days. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a whole new range of emotions that are brought to “HQ” as the story’s young heroine, Riley, becomes a teenager. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren’t so sure what to make of the arrival of Fear, Envy, Boredom and Embarrassment.

Amy Poehler leads the voice cast, which also includes Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Paul Walter Hauser and Yvette Nicole Brown.

Inside Out 2 makes life difficult for Illumination and Universal’s 4th of July blockbuster Despicable Me 4which will have an early release in select foreign markets before opening domestically around July 4. But the film still has plenty of time to regroup. Despicable Me 4currently playing in 20 markets, grossed $13.9 million this weekend for a preliminary total of $25.3 million and is expected to create fireworks across the U.S. when it premieres on July 3.

This weekend at number 2 in the domestic cinema charts, A quiet place: day one has every reason to celebrate after scoring the franchise’s best weekend opening of $53 million, well above the expected $40 million-plus opening. The prequel’s performance is especially impressive considering that series creator John Krasinski did not direct this time around, nor did Emily Blunt star in the lead role.

Instead, Michael Sarnoski (Pig) was brought to the top day onebased on a story he and Krasinski co-created. Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn star in the $70 million film, which received generally good reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, a good grade for a horror film. The 18-34 audience is fueling the film, along with an ethnically diverse audience. It also conquered many Imax and premium big screens from Inside Out 2.

“The Quiet place “The franchise is alive and well,” says Chris Aronson, Paramount’s domestic distribution chief. “We’ve given the film a fresh and new look, and it has a worthy place in the series.”

Directed by Krasinski, A quiet place was a surprise box office hit in 2018, opening with $50 million despite featuring virtually no dialogue. A Quiet Place: Part IIwhich was released on Memorial Day 2022, when the box office was still in recovery mode from the COVID-19 pandemic, grossed $57 million over the four holidays, including $47 million for the three-day weekend.

day one continues Sony’s box office boom that began in June Bad Boys: Ride or Die and cemented by Inside Out 2.

Ranked third in the domestic cinema charts behind Inside Out 2 And day one This weekend Kevin Costner’s expensive $100 million Western, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter OneThe film failed with an estimated opening capital of $11 million (overseas figures were not immediately available). The big question now is what this means for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter Twowhich will open in mid-August.

horizon is without a doubt one of the biggest curiosity factors of the summer after Costner gave up a lucrative gig on Taylor Sheridan’s hit show Yellowstone and invested tens of millions of his own money to make the decades-long passion project with four historical western films a reality.

The hope was that horizon would appeal to older white men in the American heartland. Although the film reached its target audience – 57 percent of the audience was male, while over 75 percent of ticket buyers were white – it did not do so to the extent hoped. A B CinemaScore and mediocre reviews certainly did not help. The best theater was in Salt Lake City (Costner shot the film in Utah).

Warners agreed to distribute and market the first two Horizon films in the U.S. for a fee. Costner – who promoted the film tirelessly – invested $38 million of his own money, while two mystery investors also contributed equity. The rest of the budget came from selling foreign rights with the help of distribution company K5 International, which premiered the film at the Cannes Film Festival. (horizon arrives in numerous markets this weekend). Costner is also handling marketing money for the film.

Bad Boys 4 almost as much as horizon in its fourth weekend and grossed $10.3 million, landing at number 4. The film’s domestic revenue is $165.3 million. Overseas, it added $13.1 million in 66 markets, for a worldwide total of $332 million. This is a remarkable comeback for Will Smith after his memorable Oscar loss in 2022. The last Bad Boys The installment ended up grossing $462 million worldwide in a less competitive market.)
