3 swimmers rescued, 1 missing in Lake Michigan near Evanston

The Evanston Fire Department called off the search hours after a swimmer went missing near Lighthouse Beach Sunday evening, officials said.

Rescue crews arrived at the beach around 4 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about four swimmers in trouble in the water, the Evanston Fire Department said Sunday evening. Before they arrived, a woman and two teenagers were rescued by a community member; one of the teens was taken to a hospital.

A fourth swimmer, a 41-year-old man, was still missing after the Evanston Fire Department — with assistance from the Wilmette Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Chicago Fire Department — used drones, a helicopter and sonar to find him, officials said. The search was called off around 9 p.m. due to water conditions, officials said, but “recovery efforts” are expected to resume in the morning.

Authorities said a red flag had been raised on the beach, indicating a ban on swimming due to strong winds and dangerous bathing conditions.
