The Beyoncé effect is real. Shaboozey followed fellow country artist Tanner Adell with his second performance at the 2024 BET Awards, which took center stage on Sunday (June 30).

His performance consisted of dancers in a saloon line dancing while he performed his hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – a version of J-Kwon’s own 2004 hit “Tipsy.” Boozey’s version made history in May when it hit No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, displacing Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” marking the first time since 1958 that two black artists topped the country charts for two consecutive weeks. The song also peaked at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 on the May 11 chart.

The highlight of the performance, however, was when he brought J-Kwon on stage to perform “Tipsy,” which understandably drew huge cheers from the audience.

Billboard spoke to the St. Louis rapper in April about what he thought about Shaboozey’s tribute. “It’s not even a tribute, actually; I got an insane percentage,” he said at the time, noting that he was “proud” of the country singer.

Getting J-Kwon’s blessing and recognition was important for the Virginia native. “The feeling that you made the song, you’re righteous and then you get that co-signature, not everyone gets that,” he said Billboard in May.

Following his appearance on Beyoncé’s country-heavy, genre-bending Cowboy Carter album twice, Shaboozey was in the spotlight and he seized the opportunity. “We were pretty well prepared for this moment,” he said previously Billboard. Someone from Beyoncé’s team came across a live performance of the then-unreleased song and contacted his team. Shaboozey then decided to release “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and the rest is history.
