“Blue suede shoes” of American singer Elvis Presley fetch 0,000 at auction

A piece from Elvis Presley’s history fetched a large sum at auction. CNN reported that the King’s worn blue suede shoes, which he wore both on and off stage in the 1950s, sold for a whopping $152,000 at Henry Aldridge and son Auction House.

These iconic shoes, which he wore during performances of “Hound Dog” and “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” on “The Steve Allen Show,” were given to a friend by Presley before he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

To ensure authenticity, the shoes came with a double confirmation of provenance. First, a certificate of authenticity signed by Jimmy Velvet, a close friend of Presley and founder of the Elvis Presley Museum. Second, there was a handwritten letter from the recipient himself, Alan Fortas.

In the letter, Fortas recounts the night before Presley left for the Army, where they had a late-night party at Graceland, followed by a trip to the roller skating rink. Presley, expecting a new wardrobe upon his return from service, gave Fortas the blue suede shoes and recalled the King’s life before his time as a soldier.

“The night before Elvis’s induction into the Army here in Memphis, Elvis hosted an all-night party at Graceland,” the letter states, according to the auction site.

“Afterward, we went to the Rainbow roller rink. When we all got home, Elvis called a few of us upstairs and gave away some of his clothes that he thought he didn’t want to wear or have when he got back from the Army. That night, Elvis gave me these blue suede shoes in size 10 1/2. I’ve had them all these years,” the letter continued.

According to Henry Aldridge and Son, another legendary outfit also went under the hammer at the auction: Freddie Mercury’s clothing from Queen’s “I’m Going Slightly Mad” video, which sold for an incredible $250,000.
