Club América defeats Tigres and wins the Liga MX Super Cup

In front of a very pro-Club América crowd at Dignity Health Sports Park, the reigning Mexican champions overcame a first-half deficit to defeat Tigres UANL 2-1 and claim the 2024 Liga MX Super Cup on Saturday afternoon in Carson.

Normally, the Campeón de Campeones is contested between the champions of the Apertura and Clasura of Liga MX at the start of the new season, but with Club América claiming two consecutive titles in the 2023 Apertura and 2024 Clasura, Saturday’s match was dubbed the Liga MX Super Copa (also known as the Liga MX Super Cup), pitting América against the winner of the 2023 Campeón de Campeones, Tigres UANL.

Tigres made a confident start, scoring a goal within seven minutes with a beautiful one-two combination down the right flank involving four Tigres players before Juan Brunetta scored the winner.

It didn’t take long for Club América to strike back with a dream goal of their own from Javairô Dilrosun, equalising at 1-1 in the 24th minute.

Ten minutes before the end of the first half, América struck again: USMNT winger Alex Zendejas served his pass on a silver platter to captain Henry Martin, who was able to slot the ball home.

Although Tigres continued to control the game and dominate possession, América were the more determined team in the first half. Tigres took three times as many shots, created twice as many big chances and still went into halftime trailing 2-1.

América took more control of the game in the second half with the lead, using possession to their advantage, but still didn’t create many chances, even though they no longer needed them. Tigres continued to pound on the door with their significantly higher shot rate as they chased the game, but it was not enough to break through.

Club América won 2-1, took the Super Cup of Liga MX 2024 and continues to be in a good position for the Apertura of Liga MX 2024.
