Mets comeback fails after 10-5 defeat in the final of extra innings

On a day that went from sunny and warm to soaking wet, the New York Mets and Houston Astros faced off in the deciding game of a weekend series at Citi Field. After the Mets recovered from an early Astros charge, Houston picked up extra runners in the 10th and 11th innings to defeat New York 10-5.

From the beginning, Houston took advantage of its opportunities and Jon Singleton He hit a home run to center field in the second inning, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning Yainer Diaz‘s line drive single to the right fielder DJ Stewart achieved Alex Bregman and moves Jordan Alvarez for the third time and extended the lead to 2-0.

The Astros continued to apply pressure in the fourth and fifth innings and made it 4-0. Luis Severino struggled at first, allowing four runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts on 79 pitches, but then he managed to calm down and prevent further hits.

Meanwhile, the Mets showed some offensive opportunities in the second inning with hard-hit balls, including a 109.9 mph lineout, a 106.1 mph lineout, a walk and a 105.2 mph lineout, but were unable to capitalize and ended the inning trailing 1-0. By the end of the fifth inning, the Astros’ bullpen had held the Mets hitless. Mark Vientos delivered a crucial two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning, cutting Houston’s lead to 4-2.

In the second half of the seventh inning Brandon Nimmo hit his 100th career home run into left center field with a runner on base, tying the game at 4-4. Adrian Houser provided the stability the Mets needed from their bullpen, maneuvering around a double in the eighth inning and pitching two solid innings to keep the game tied. Luis Torrens showed his skills in defense by throwing the substitute runner out of the game Joey Loperfido tried to steal second base in the ninth inning and Chas McCormick in the tenth.

A rain delay of two hours and 47 minutes halted the action until the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Mets were unable to score. Houston managed to bring home the free runner and take the lead, but the Mets answered with Nimmo, who singled in Francisco Lindor to tie the game at 5:5 and continue his strong afternoon.

Both bullpens did well, except for the two chances with the free runner on second base, until Houston attacked the newly called up Mets pitcher Matt Festa for five runs in the eleventh inning to seal the win for the Astros.

Statistics of the game: Luis Torrens caught stealing power

Since he was acquired by the Yankees about a month ago, Luis Torrens was a productive backup for Francisco Alvarez both with the bat and his defense. Since joining the Mets, and including Sunday, Torrens threw out his fifth and sixth runners in eight attempts when he threw out the Astros’ runner trying to steal second base in the ninth inning and another runner in the 10th.

Player of the game: Brandon Nimmo

Brandon Nimmo had a strong hitting game, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Two of those runs came on a two-run home run that tied the game and was Nimmo’s 100th of his career.
