Caitlin Clark continued her dangerous rookie streak with an impressive win over a league legend on Sunday.
Clark and the Fever earned their eighth win of the season with an 88-82 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. After making history on Thursday against the Seattle Storm, Clark nearly entered the record books again when she finished Sunday’s game just one rebound away from a triple-double. Clark posted 15 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. Her play reminded spectators of the dual threat Clark represents as an accomplished point scorer. And Moderator.
As Sporting World reported, Clark scored or was responsible for 44 of the Fever’s 88 points.
The game was also sold out at the Footprint Center with 17,071 fans. Even though it was a home game for Phoenix, the fans went crazy for Clark.

Clark would have become the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double. With three minutes left in the game, all eyes were on Clark to grab her final rebound. She left the court the winner as Indiana ended a tight final minute against the Mercury, losing the lead time and time again.
On Sunday, Clark and WNBA legend Diana Taurasi met for the first time. It was the first Old school vs. new school face-off in sports, and it was no disappointment. Amid the hype surrounding Caitlin Clark’s offseason debut, Taurasi was one of the WNBA stars warning everyone to hit the brakes, anticipating the (natural) learning curve of the transition from college to the pros.
It’s safe to say Clark is fitting in well in the league. On Thursday against the Storm, Clark became the fastest WNBA player to reach 300 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists.
It was a tough battle until the end, but Phoenix squandered its chances late in the game. Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell put the Fever ahead 83-82 with a long jump shot with 35 seconds left.
Phoenix was planning a play that would potentially lead to the lead. The ball was thrown to Mercury’s Brittney Griner and a teammate knocked it out of her hands, resulting in a Phoenix turnover and ending all of Phoenix’s chances.
The contest was closely contested as both teams began with a combative first half. Indiana fought back in the second half after entering halftime trailing by 11 points.
Before and after the game, Taurasi and Griner met with Clark for friendly conversations; in contrast to Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky.
A triple-double on Sunday would have all but sealed Clark’s chances of winning Rookie of the Year. Sunday’s win also marked the first time Indiana defeated an opponent with a record above .500.
After playing through a front-loaded schedule (Thank you, WNBA), Caitlin Clark and the Fever (8-12) are developing in the right direction.
