All the details on what the Warriors still owe the Wizards after firing Chris Paul

All the details on what the Warriors still owe the Wizards after firing Chris Paul

The Washington Wizards have been active and aggressive in the offseason. From trading Deni Avdija to Portland to signing three young talents to help with the rebuild, the franchise is eager to start building. Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly and Bub Carrington are a strong start and the trio could develop into the next core in the nation’s capital.

The Wizards will be without Jordan Poole for the foreseeable future, but that trade got better for Washington on June 30 when Golden State released Chris Paul. That was no surprise. The Warriors tried to trade the future Hall of Famer but couldn’t find a deal. CP3 is now a free agent, leaving the Dubs with just one season with that trade.

The Warriors still owe Washington a significant amount from the deal. Here’s a look at the picks that are still coming to the nation’s capital.

Golden State traded Jordan Poole, Ryan Rollins and Patrick Baldwin, as well as draft picks and cash, for CP3 in the 2023 offseason. Rollins was released in January, but Poole and Baldwin are still under contract in Washington. The Dubs still owe that selection to the Wizards.

Wizards still receive

2030 first-round draft pick (top 20 protected)
2027, second-round pick

There is no guarantee that the Warriors will make the playoffs in 2030. If the pick is unsuccessful, Golden State will trade its 2030 second-round draft pick to Washington.

The Wizards don’t care how they pay Jordan Poole. They need to hit the salary floor and have no plans to play in 2025. Poole’s contract is one of the worst in the NBA, but he’s becoming increasingly tradeable. He’ll be a free agent in 2027, and Washington would have no problem offloading his expiring contract if they’re ready to play in the summer of 2026.

The Washington Wizards are the big winners of the Chris Paul-Jordan Poole trade. This trade is a no-brainer if one of the draft picks pans out. Washington has two chances and has found good talent under its new regime.

There should be hope and confidence in the nation’s capital. The Washington Wizards are building something special. It will take time, but don’t be surprised if the franchise emerges soon. They will have that Chris Paul transfer to thank for that, among other things.
