Mariners miss several chances to lose the series against the Twins; Here’s how it happened

The Seattle Mariners lost the series to the Minnesota Twins by losing the finale 5-3 on Sunday. That was the first time the M’s lost two consecutive home games since mid-April and dropped to 47-39 on the season. As we do after every game, here’s everything you need to know:

This game was primarily about missed opportunities on offense. The Mariners entered the game with the worst batting average in baseball, and that pattern continued Sunday. Seattle had runners on second and third base and one out in the first inning and failed to score. They had runners on first and second base in the second inning and failed to score. They failed to score with runners on first and second base and two outs in the sixth inning. They had runners on first and third base and two outs in the seventh inning and failed to score another score.

With a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, Austin Martin hit a double to left to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.

Jose Miranda increased the lead to 3-0 with a single to left on a broken bat.

The Mariners got within 3-2 in the fifth inning thanks to some infield wizardry. Julio Rodriguez brought in a run on a ball to the pitcher and Luke Raley brought in a run on a ball that no one covered.

The M’s tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh inning with a two-out single by Jorge Polanco.

Trevor Larnach broke the 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with a home run against Ryne Stanek.

Luke Raley went 3 for 5 in the loss… Mitch Garver left the field with a bruised right wrist, requiring the pitcher to bat in the correct spot in the order… Luis Castillo struck out at the sight of three consecutive fastballs… The pitcher did not hit again as Ryan Bliss, Victor Robles and Mitch Haniger each hit in that spot… The M’s have Monday off before facing the Orioles on Tuesday.
