Chris Paul released by Warriors, becomes unrestricted NBA free agent – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The Chris Paul era is over for the Warriors.

Golden State released the 39-year-old point guard on Sunday and he will become an NBA free agent, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported, citing sources. The Warriors later confirmed the move.

The Warriors’ original deadline to decide whether they would pick up Paul’s $30 million team option for the 2024–25 NBA season was Friday, June 28, but both parties agreed to push the deadline back to Sunday as Golden State tried to work on trade packages that included him.

After the Warriors acquired Paul from the Washington Wizards last year in a trade package that also included former first-round draft pick Jordan Poole, the 39-year-old was a key backup player, averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game in 58 appearances. But $30 million is a lot of money for a backup player, even one of Paul’s caliber.

Now it looks like the Warriors are moving on from the likely Hall of Famer, creating plenty of room under the salary cap.
