Comic storytelling workshop for children/teens

15–19 July, daily 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts

Calling all superfans! Creating comic book characters and building new, strange worlds is the focus of this Summer Academy workshop with literature teacher and graphic novelist Scott Beatty, who has written hundreds of adventures for many of comics’ most famous characters, including Batman and Robin stories for DC Comics, and The Phantom, Buck Rogers, and Sherlock Holmes for Dynamite Entertainment. Beatty has also contributed comic book stories to IDW Publishing, Dark Horse Comics, and Crossgen Comics.

You’ll learn about the history of comics, how graphic novels are produced, and then you’ll create the secret origin of your own character and document their first adventures in script and art! Students can showcase their creations during a short “talkback” session and present their work like comic book pros to parents and families on the last day of class! Open to children in grades 6-9. (Older children may be considered).

This workshop is part of the school’s Summer Academy, a program of arts enrichment workshops open to the public. For more information and to register, visit www.CharterArts.org.
