Chris Martin says Back to the Future inspired Coldplay as Michael J. Fox plays guitar with the band

Michael J. Fox had a surprise appearance with Coldplay in England.

The Back to the Future star joined the band at the end of their performance at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival on June 29.

Fox was introduced by the band’s frontman Chris Martin when he began to improvise a melody whose lyrics were inspired by fans in the audience and the co-founder of the festival, Michael Eavis.

Next, Martin sang an ode to Fox, with the camera panning to Fox holding a guitar backstage as the crowd went wild for the actor.

“Oh, here’s another legendary Michael,” Martin sang as he strummed his guitar. “One that just rocks. With his Chuck Berry riff and the way he beat Biff, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Michael J. Fox.”

Fox jammed with the band during a performance of their hit “Fix You.”

At one point in the song, Martin joined Fox and sang alongside him. As they built up to the song’s iconic bridge, Fox joined the rest of the band, strumming his guitar passionately and throwing his leg in the air on the beat drop.

At the end of the performance, Martin took a moment to thank Fox for sharing the stage with them and being their “hero.”

“Thank you to everyone and especially thank you to the main reason we’re in a band, which is because we saw Back to the Future,” Martin said. “So thank you to our eternal hero and one of the greatest people in the world, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you, Michael.”

Earlier this year, Fox was once again warmly welcomed by the audience at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards in February.

When he announced the winner of the Best Picture award, the five-time Emmy winner was greeted with a standing ovation. The moment came just a few years after Fox announced his retirement from acting in 2020 due to the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

Fox was diagnosed with early-stage Parkinson’s disease in 1991 when the actor developed a tremor in his little finger while filming “Doc Hollywood.” He did not share his diagnosis publicly until 1998.

In the years following his diagnosis, Fox continued to work as an actor, appearing in roles on “Scrubs,” “The Good Wife” and “Cut It, Larry!” After leaving “Chaos City” in 2000 to focus on his advocacy work, he starred in his own NBC comedy, “The Michael J. Fox Show,” in 2013.

His awards include an honorary Oscar. Fox was honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 13th Governors Awards in November 2022.

In the May 2023 documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” Fox was able to tell his story and openly share his firsthand experience with Parkinson’s disease. The film, which is available to stream on Apple TV+, follows his rise to fame and reveals details about his initial diagnosis.
