The Beatles’ influence around the world is examined in a new book by a visiting professor at the University of Chester.

Dr. Stephen F. Kelly, visiting professor of media at the university, is the author of a new book, How the Beatles rocked the world (Books with pen and sword).

In his book, Stephen examines the influence of the Beatles on British society during this time of change, drawing on his own experiences at the band’s performance at the Cavern in Liverpool.

The book shows how the Fab Four entered the pop scene in 1962 and not only influenced the music world, but also founded a counterculture with far-reaching consequences. Their long hair, humor and irreverent attitude toward authority brought a breath of fresh air to a generation tired of the monotony of the post-war years.

Beatlemania sparked a revolution against the outdated norms of the 1950s. Young people seeking to escape the stifling formality of the suburbs led the rebellion. In politics, fashion, education, art, religion, television, women’s rights and universities, the old order faced challenges. The Swinging Sixties brought more liberal attitudes and promised change and a fairer world. Contraception, legalized abortion, gay rights, easier divorce and relaxed censorship were all part of this social change.

The Beatles’ influence extended beyond Britain and resonated throughout Europe and especially in America. American teenagers were fighting not only against the Vietnam War but also for civil rights.

Stephen, from Birkenhead, is the bestselling author of over 25 books, many of them about sports personalities and oral histories. He was a producer at Granada Television for many years and before that a political journalist in London. He has written for most newspapers and magazines.

Stephen said: “The Beatles’ legacy is far-reaching, not just in terms of music but also through the band’s enduring influence around the world. It was fascinating to explore and remember the influence that the world still feels today.”
