Death toll in Tamil Nadu liquor tragedy rises to 65

Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu:

According to the district administration, the death toll in the liquor tragedy in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu state has risen to 65 on Sunday.

As of 4 p.m. Sunday, 148 people had been discharged from the state’s hospitals.

Currently, two people are being treated at the Kallakurichi Government Medical and Hospital.

Six people are being treated in Puducherry and eight in government hospitals in Salem. A total of 16 people are currently being treated.

The NCW had earlier taken cognizance of a media report about the deaths in the incident and set up a three-member inquiry committee headed by NCW member Khushbu Sundar to investigate the case.

A three-member delegation of the National Commission for Women led by Khushbu Sundar visited the families of victims who lost their lives due to consumption of banned liquor in Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, on June 28, the NDA delegation comprising BJP leaders Anil Antony, Arvind Menon and MP GK Vasan met with National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman Kishore Makwana to submit a memorandum on the illicit liquor tragedy in Kallakurichi (Tamil Nadu).

They appealed to the Chairman to ensure that the families of the victims of the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy receive adequate compensation and justice.

The memorandum called for urgent intervention to ensure justice for the civilian victims of the Kallakurichi alcohol tragedy.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami along with party workers is on hunger strike demanding a CBI inquiry into the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy and the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin over the “inefficiency of the DMK government”.
