As one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation and beyond, Emma Stone has proven that she is not bound by genre restrictions, while also proving time and again that she is most comfortable in the realm of comedy. She follows her Oscar-winning Poor things Performance with the “Stirring and great” Types of kindnessand it seems plausible that fans will see her appear on Saturday Night Live for her first moderation job after be greeted by other icons in the Sketch series’ esteemed Five Timers Club.
While promoting her second team-up with director Yorgos Lanthimos, Stone appeared The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and chatted with SNL veteran presenter about her launch in December 2023 and said during the interview that hosting the show is one of the most important experiences she can have. She also spoke about a certain rule that celebs apparently have to abide by when it comes to their Five Timers Club attire that fans may not be aware of. In her words:
Well, that’s the weird thing – and I don’t want to steal the show because it’s my favorite place. But they don’t want you to keep the jacket. They’ll say, “Well, you’re not keeping the jacket, you’re just wearing it for the monologue…” I said, “No. I’m taking it with me. I’m wearing it to the after-party. I’m taking it home.”
It is possible that Lorne Michaels & Co. Saturday Night LiveThe Five Timers Club jacket has been part of the celebrations for years as it offers the more experienced presenters some extra recognition behind the scenes in the form of champagne or cake. However, when the club was first mentioned on air by Tom Hanks in the December 1990 episode, it was a little different and was referred to as the club robe.
Regardless of what it is called, the Five Timers jacket seems to be some sort of honor that those who have earned it should take home to add to their wearable trophy collection. And no doubt many viewers, such as myself, believe this to be the case, despite both Emma Stone and Jimmy Fallon making it quite clear that this is not the case. The Tonight Show The moderator even went so far as to describe the monologue focusing on the jacket as a “sketch.”
As it turned out, Emma Stone actually took the jacket with her to wear at one of the Saturday Night Live‘s famous after-parties and The curse Co-star says she didn’t return it even after that. As she put it:
Yes, and I took it home and now it’s in my closet. But they also know where to find me.
It is almost a sketchy idea for Lorne Michaels to consider whether he should SNL Enforcers were sent to Emma Stone’s house to try and retrieve the Five Timers Club jacket. But assuming the show’s costume department isn’t THAT meticulous about taking care of each and every piece of clothing, Stone may have gotten away with it. That could be her reward for hosting for the sixth time, though.
It is not as if Saturday Night Live has only a single jacket that is brought out for each new member. Had that been the case, Kristen Wiig’s induction in April 2024 would have looked very different, as it would have included appearances in jackets by, for example, Paul Rudd (the only actually different member), Matt Damon, Fred Armisen, Will Forte, and others, the whole joke being that the jackets are essentially worthless at that point.
But nothing about Emma Stone’s recording was worthless, as can be seen in the SNL Clip below!
