Ten-year-old finds World War II grenade at the end of his garden

A TEN-year-old boy had the shock of his life when he went to search for his football at the bottom of his garden and found a World War II grenade.

Adam Houghton, of Droitwich Road, Fernhill Heath, couldn’t believe it when he heard his son Rory shout: “Dad, I’ve found a grenade.”

Mr Houghton saw his son Rory shaking as he looked at the gravel after going to fetch his football on Saturday afternoon.

To the couple’s surprise, Rory had discovered the grenade buried under the gravel at the end of his garden.

Mr Houghton said he did not believe his son at first but eventually went into the garden and saw Rory holding the grenade.

Upon closer inspection, a relieved Mr. Houghton found that there was nothing inside the grenade.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw what it was,” Mr Houghton said.

“Rory just stood there, shaking. He just went to the other end of the garden to look for his football.

“We’ve lived in this house for about four years now. You’d expect me to have seen it in that time while I was weeding or something.”

After researching online, Mr. Houghton and Rory discovered that this grenade was from World War II.

Mr Houghton added: “We got hold of an old toothbrush and cleaned it. It’s remarkable how well it’s still intact considering how old it is and that it’s been lying in the ground.”

“You can see so many interesting details, like where the pin would have gone through and where you would have pressed it before you threw it.”

Young Rory told the Worcester News he would like to keep the grenade and display it.

“He will have quite a story to tell when he goes back to school tomorrow,” added Mr Houghton.

“He wants to tell all his friends, after all, it’s such a strange story.”
