Musician Chrissie Hynde is described as a “real singer”

Chrissie Hynde remains one of those physically and mentally talented individuals whose magnetism always made her destined to follow in the footsteps of the greats. Long before she stepped into the spotlight, she was surrounded by music icons, many of whom only dreamed of being close to them, just to secure their share of success and get others to follow her in the same way.

Hynde’s early days were marked by the fiery anti-establishment rallies of the punk movement, and she found camaraderie in bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and Generation X. Although she got a taste of what life in the industry might be like in these scenes, she found her true calling when she moved into rockier areas, guided by a desire to make music, not war.

Aside from Hynde’s obvious suitability for the genre as a whole, her voice became a key beacon for other women in the genre looking to break into a band. Hynde had that beautiful rock voice, but she also had a special kind of vocal control that made her adept at churning out classic rock hits as well as slower, soulful ballads.

She also thrived when she moved in the middle. “I’ll Stand by You” showcased her obvious vocal prowess, but songs like “Don’t Get Me Wrong” showed that she could capture emotion in her voice like no other. Not only does Hynde have an exceptionally intoxicating voice, her varied tones add extra weight to the lyrics, guiding melodies through narrative and feeling rather than just the words.

If you ask Hynde, however, she’ll probably point to a handful of other singers before deeming herself as equally brilliant as her contemporaries. For example, it’s a fact that Joni Mitchell is one of the greatest singers of all time, but for Hynde, she’s completely untouchable. The atmosphere at Mitchell’s 1995 concert in New York seemed to be completely filled with the awestruck passion of fellow musicians, but no one seemed as fired up as Hynde himself.

In fact, watching the master at work nearly got her into an argument with another musician, Carly Simon, who seemed annoyed by Hynde’s sudden outburst of anger toward the legend on stage. After shouting “We love you, Joni!” and “Joni, you rock!”, Hynde reportedly nearly got into a physical altercation with Simon, who urged her to stop yelling and put on a show from the sidelines.

In response, Hynde hissed threateningly: “That,” referring to Mitchell, “is a real singer.” According to Hynde, she was probably a little too excited, but she couldn’t help it – she more than deserved to shout about how “brilliant” Mitchell had performed. “I screamed, ‘Do it, bitch!’ She’s only human – everyone needs to know they’re loved,” the singer said.
