Where Mets’ Jose Iglesias’ song ranks on the charts after its debut on Friday

NEW YORK — At Citi Field, Mets infielder Jose Iglesias’ song “OMG” is a hit. It’s played not only every time Iglesias, who recorded it under his stage name Candelita, steps up to bat, but also every time a Mets player hits a home run.

The song was finally released to a wider audience on all streaming services on Friday. The Mets celebrated the song’s release with a performance by Iglesias after beating the Astros 7-2.

On Saturday, streamers began posting the song’s chart placement. Iglesias would be happy to know that “OMG” is listed as the No. 1 Latin song on iTunes, ahead of Grammy winner Karol G.

Iglesias was asked what it meant to him to be able to celebrate the song’s release with a performance where the entire team came out on the field with him. It was symbolic of the mood at the Mets after a May 29 loss that included an on-field (and off-field) nervous breakdown by Jorge López and a players-only gathering.

“It was a special moment. It shows how close we are. It shows what we are as a group,” Iglesias said. “And it’s a whirlwind, we’re just living one day at a time, and that’s what we have to do now.”

The Mets have been a completely different team since May 30, and coincidentally, that’s when Iglesias was called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Since then, they have the best record (17-6) in baseball and have improved their overall record from 22-33 to 40-39.

Before this season, Iglesias had not played in the major leagues since 2022, when he was with the Rockies. In 118 games with Colorado, the 6-foot-4 shortstop batted .292 with 33 extra-base hits, including 30 doubles and 47 RBIs.

Before that, he played ten seasons in five organizations – the Red Sox, Tigers, Reds, Orioles and Angels – and posted a .277 batting average and .700 OPS, was runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year in 2013 and was selected as an All-Star with Detroit in 2015.

In 17 games this season, Iglesias has hit 14 of 36 hits (.389 batting average) with six RBIs and one stolen base.
