Mets announce numerous roster changes ahead of series finale against Houston

The New York Mets are in a roster crisis, so turnover continues, especially in the bullpen. The team announced the following roster changes Sunday morning:

Tylor Megill’s rough season continued on Saturday as he lasted just 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and five hits. His ERA for the season is 5.08 as his career-long struggle to establish himself as a consistent major league starter continues. Megill’s demotion paves the way for Christian Scott to be recalled and start within the week. It also allows a much-needed fresh bullpen player to arrive for the series finale on Sunday.

Danny Young’s ups and downs in the system also continue. Young threw 1 1/3 innings in Saturday’s game, allowing three runs and two hits. His major league ERA this season is 5.11.

The new additions to the bullpen are left-hander Tyler Jay and right-hander Matt Festa. Jay, who has thrown four innings in the major leagues this season, has thrown 36 innings for Triple-A Syracuse this year. He has a 2.00 ERA. He last pitched for Syracuse on June 28.

Matt Festa, on the other hand, who signed a minor league deal with the Mets after being released by the San Diego Padres earlier in the season, has a 3.16 ERA in Triple-A this year, split between two organizations. Since joining Syracuse, he has impressed, throwing 15 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 1.76 ERA.

Festa last pitched for Syracuse on June 25 and has seven one-inning-plus appearances with the Triple-A Mets, so he can give New York some length if he needs to. He has a 4.32 ERA and 4.77 FIP in 93 2/3 major league innings, all with Seattle. He threw 54 innings for the Mariners in 2022, posting a 4.17 ERA (4.26 FIP) with 64 strikeouts. Festa primarily throws two pitches, a 90 mph fastball and a sweeper.

In addition, Brooks Raley underwent Thomas John He had surgery about a month ago, so his placement on the 60-day injured list was expected at some point, but his season is over. Outfielder Duke Ellis was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox on June 16. At the time of his DFA, he was with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A).

The Mets will seek another series win this afternoon against the Houston Astros at 1:40 p.m. ET at Citi Field.
