Mobile Suit Gundam’s Bandai is “carefully considering” replacing its biggest actor

Following a public scandal involving well-known voice actor Toru Furuya, Bandai has announced that it is “carefully considering” reprising his role as Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit GundamThe actor has already spoken about his roles as Sabo in One piece and Furuya Rei (aka Tooru Amuro) in Detective Conan.




After the 70-year-old voice actor publicly admitted to physically assaulting a fan 37 years his junior with whom he had an extramarital affair, Furuya resigned from two of his main roles in One piece And Detective Conanwhich led fans to wonder if he would do the same for his role as the protagonist in Mobile Suit GundamAccording to Yahoo News, Bandai Namco (owner of Mobile Suit Gundams production studio Sunrise Nippon) responded to a question about a role change for Amuro Ray in light of the Furuya scandal.

In response, Bandai Namco stated, “At our company, we attach great importance to the characters featured in the work and their worldview. On this matter, we would like to carefully consider and respond, so we will not comment at this time.” Furuya has since taken on the voice acting role of Amuro Ray. Mobile Suit Gundam‘s founding in 1979, in the anime series that covers the entire Gundam series into the successful franchise it is today. Although the last Gundam Films have not shown Ray as a protagonist, the character appears again and again in Gundam Video game adaptations as well as some cameos in modern Gundam Productions.


Regardless, Ray is an important part of the series and the decision to find a new voice actor is Gundam and Bandai Namco as Gundam‘s owner. Although Bandai has neither confirmed nor denied a replacement, it is clear that the company is considering the change. After Toei (the animation studio behind One piece) and TMS Entertainment (the animation studio behind Detective Conan) have quickly set a precedent by replacing the voice actors behind his previous roles. Atlus, the studio producing the upcoming game, Metaphor: ReFantazioalso quickly dismissed him from office.
