Shocking moment: Tory students at Warwick University dance in tuxedos to the Nazi song “Erika” at their annual dinner

This is the shocking moment conservative students at Warwick University allegedly dance to a Nazi song at an annual tuxedo-compulsory dinner.

At the Warwick University Conservative Association (UWCA) ‘chairman’s dinner’ last month, a member reportedly asked the DJ to play ‘Erika’, a song composed in 1938 by Herms Niel, a group leader in the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party.

The song has since been reclaimed by white supremacists such as Thomas Sewell, the founder of the National Socialist Network, who has links to the Christchurch mosque attacker.

Footage of the dinner shows students dancing and laughing to the song until one member tells the cameraman to stop filming.

Members of the association are said to have then shouted “Kill the Hughs” – apparently replacing the word Jews with the first name of their former chairman, Hugh Herring – and also said “Hail to the Chairman”, according to the Times.

The conservative group has since issued an apology, stating that it “strongly condemns the behavior shown in this video and apologizes for any offense caused.”

It continued: “The song ‘Erika’ was played for a short time. When we realized which song was being played and what it stood for, a board member spoke to the DJ and the song was immediately turned off.”

“We later found out that the song was requested by an individual member directly from the DJ. We stress that it was not included in the pre-planned music selection that was given to the DJ.”

The UWCA said the member who requested the song be played would be banned from future events and that the same would apply to anyone else who “knowingly engaged with the song”.

“We can also confirm that the person who was heard actively singing the lyrics is not a member of the University of Warwick Conservative Association and that he, along with others, has been excluded from future events,” the statement to MailOnline continued.

“We would like to point out that the vast majority of people seen in the video were completely unaware of the origins and connotations of the song.”

The UWCA said it had “spoken extensively with those present at the event and no one had any knowledge or recollection of these comments/chants” regarding the alleged “Kill the Hughs” chants.

Following the reporting of the events at the Chairman’s Dinner, the group, whose honorary president is former Tory cabinet minister and Warwick graduate Dame Andrea Leadsom, has removed its website and closed its page on X.

A spokesman for Warwick, one of the Russell Group’s top 24 universities, told MailOnline: “We have been made aware of this video and the allegations surrounding it, which are extremely disturbing. Such behaviour is reprehensible and we are disappointed that our students have been implicated.”

“The university is reviewing the material that was sent to us through our reporting service and has notified the student union. We have requested a meeting with the Jewish Society (Jsoc) to assist us in our review.”

Meanwhile, the university’s Jewish Students’ Association and the campus’s JSoc said: “The blatant and unchallenged support of Nazism at the Warwick Conservative Association’s ‘Chairman’s Dinner’ is utterly abhorrent.”

They added that they expected the university to act “swiftly and decisively” regarding the incident.

This comes as cases of anti-Semitism on British universities are increasing amid the war between Israel and Hamas.

Just last month, Jewish professors and students revealed the shocking extent of anti-Semitism at Oxford University: more than 70 incidents in eight months.

A dossier submitted to the Vice Chancellor contains numerous allegations of bullying. One student was insulted because of his “Jewish nose”.

Meanwhile, participants in a vigil for Hamas hostages were called “child murderers” and an academic supervisor is said to have told his student: “Israel is a terrorist state.”

Complaints were ignored and some were advised to simply leave Oxford if they felt unwell.

A letter accompanying the files states: “We felt isolated, unsafe, attacked, stressed, disappointed, angry and hopeless. Many of us were confronted with all kinds of anti-Semitic insults.”

A Jewish professor who spoke to the Mail anonymously said: “What was once a hate-against-Israel movement has become a hate-against-Jews movement. Many students and lecturers feel very hurt – they have dropped out or interrupted their studies.”

The letter, which was unsigned due to its authors’ concerns for their safety, was the result of “a series of meetings and discussions we had with dozens of Jews and Israelis in Oxford.”

The letter describes a “hostile environment” for anyone who believes in Israel’s right to exist. The university is “inundated” with messages about plans to “globalize the Intifada and erase Israel’s existence.”

“The Oxford administration would probably not turn a blind eye to faculty members making such comments about other minorities,” it continued.

The other 72 anti-Semitic incidents included one professor telling students the October 7 massacre was “justified,” while another claimed it was planned by Israel.
