Armstrong music

The Sanctuary in Arcata presents the fourth concert in the “In The Constellations Now” series on July 6, honoring one of the most influential instrumentalists and singers of the 20th century, Louis Armstrong.

According to a press release about the event, “Armstrong’s birthday was traditionally celebrated on July 4, 1900, but recent research revealed that a birth certificate dates from August 4, 1901. The Sanctuary has chosen to stay true to tradition and celebrate the birthday close to the day that Louis considered his birthday.”

A group of local musicians will play a wide range of music from Armstrong’s career, with an emphasis on New Orleans jazz. Trombonist and singer James Zeller will serve as host and emcee, assisted by local trumpeter Don Hammerstedt, Katie Belknap (vocals and clarinet), Lee Phillips (bass), Ramsey Isaacs (drums) and Matthew Seno (piano).

The show also features historical background and readings from Armstrong’s own writings to put the music into context.

All shows in the series are sold out, so early ticket purchase is recommended.

The Sanctuary – a community arts center and nonprofit organization – is located at 1301 J St., Arcata. Tickets for the show range from $15 to $30. To purchase tickets, go to https://www.sanctuaryarcata.org.
