Hungary’s Orban: EU wants war with Russia and is dragging Europe along with it

Orban says that instead of “protecting the interests of the people”, the EU leadership is “imposing its own ideologies” on the citizens of the member states.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says the EU leadership is pushing the bloc into a war with Russia while neglecting the interests of its own population.

His comment in Hungarian German The newspaper wrote on Saturday: “To make matters worse, the Brussels bureaucracy, living in a bubble, has made a series of bad political decisions in recent years… Europe is being drawn ever further into a war in which it has nothing to gain and everything to lose.”

“The bureaucrats in Brussels want this war,” he said, stressing that their goal is to defeat Russia. And to achieve this, “they continue to send European citizens’ money to Ukraine. They have shot European companies in the foot with sanctions. They have driven up inflation and made life difficult for millions of European citizens.”

Orban also said that instead of “protecting the interests of the people”, the EU leadership was “imposing its own ideologies” on the citizens of member states.

Blinded by war aims

Earlier this month, Orban warned that the West was on the brink of a possible clash with Russia and that peace-promoting leadership was needed to prevent such a scenario.

In an interview with TV2 Shortly before the European Parliament elections, Orban mentioned discussions and debates about the possibility of sending more weapons and troops to Ukraine, suggesting that this course could lead to war.

He pointed out that most EU countries, including Germany, had initially committed to supplying Kyiv only with non-lethal weapons at the start of the conflict in 2022. But there was a remarkable turnaround when Western powers later supplied Ukraine with a variety of weapons and ammunition.

“Considering how this is developing, it is no exaggeration to say that we are inches from the final stop if Western European or American soldiers appear on Ukrainian territory. We are inches from a direct collision (with Russia) right now,” he said, adding that most politicians currently in power in the West “don’t see that, they want war.”

Earlier, the heads of state and government of the European Union had nominated von der Leyen for a second term as President of the European Commission at their meeting in Brussels yesterday. At the same time, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas was appointed as the new EU foreign policy chief. She will replace Spanish President Josep Borrell after an agreement on the top leadership positions was reached overnight.
