First look at the 4th of July weather: 3 things we know

A big week of weather is coming up. Here’s what we know now.

For my part, I must say that I cannot say exactly what the weather will be like on July 4th in parts of Michigan. That part is the southern third of Michigan, as there will be an area of thunderstorms south of Michigan, with indications that the storms may be in southern Michigan at times on July 4th.

This also means that the northern two-thirds of Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula should remain dry that day.

Let me give you a general overview of the period from Wednesday to Friday. The weekend after the 4th of July is too far away, and right now it looks like a gloomy weather pattern.

First, I want to tell you that the weather from Wednesday through Friday is not looking extremely hot (30 degrees) and not extremely cold (15 or 21 degrees). It looks like most of us will have afternoon temperatures around 25 degrees for the three days. That’s a good thing. We should have nice summer temperatures around the 4th of July.

Next, I can tell you that we are in a weather pattern that does not bring all-day rain. We are now in the season where thunderstorms move through and last an hour or two in one spot. If the thunderstorms start midday, that’s a real bummer. But most thunderstorm complexes develop in the late afternoon and evening or early morning. So we won’t be completely dry over the long holiday weekend. On the other hand, your location may also only see thunderstorms for a few hours during the long holiday period. Don’t be discouraged by the weather and don’t expect all-out rain showers.

Here is the forecast for the rainy areas Wednesday through Friday. Note that there will be more dry weather than wet weather. In some places, like Northern Michigan, there will be much more dry weather than wet weather.

Forecast of rainy areas from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday evening.

The weekend after the Fourth of July is very likely to see more widespread rainfall in an area of six-hour rain and storms moving across Lower Michigan.

Here are the expected maximum temperatures for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. You see a lot of red. It’s going to be summery.

Maximum temperatures from 3 to 5 July.

I think the holidays will go a little better than your phone app’s weather forecast predicts. The weather won’t be perfect during the holidays either. Don’t cancel plans for outdoor fun in Michigan. You’ll probably regret it.

We will provide you with more precise timing and locations of the rainy and fair weather areas on Monday.
