From walking the Met Gala red carpet together to raising their three children in Australia, Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have been through it all, including fame and Hollywood stress. As the 2024 Met Gala—which Chris will serve as co-chair alongside Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Anna Wintour—grabs our attention, we’re taking a look back at their love story.

May 6, 2024: They’re here! Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky’s appearance at the Met Gala was a bright spot of the evening. The couple, whose ensembles could have just as easily fit the 2022 theme of “Gilded Glamour,” walked the red carpet in matching cream and gold Tom Ford outfits.

Hemsworth wore a three-piece suit that was, shall we say, very casually styled. His shirt was unbuttoned to the chest, and Hemsworth gave the cameras a glimpse of the gold chain he wore underneath.

Pataky, meanwhile, wore a figure-hugging, floor-length gold dress and a matching gold headpiece. Her long blonde ponytail was very reminiscent of Rapunzel – perhaps she was the inspiration? What is more timeless than a fairy tale?

June 2023: Hemsworth thanks Pataky for his great career success and tells GQ“Her sacrifice, her commitment, her work, her support, her forgiveness – everything she has given me over the years has been incredible. Without her, I could not have done what I have done,” said People.

January 2023: In a super emotional episode of Hemsworth’s documentary series Limitlessthe Marvel star takes a genetic test that shows he is at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s. In the next episode, Pataky helps Hemsworth overcome his fear of aging by fitting herself with full prosthetics to transform herself into an octogenarian so Hemsworth can get to know his future self, even if he doesn’t recognize it one day. “Still beautiful,” he says.

June 2022: Twin sons Tristan and Sasha make their red carpet debut at the premiere of Thor: Love and thunder. Daughter India Rose is not there, but plays Gorr’s daughter in the film.

May 2020: Isolated during the pandemic, Hemsworth opens up to GQ about rearranging his family. “Every job I took, every time I went on these extended trips, it got harder and harder. For a while you think the kids don’t notice, but then you realize they do,” he says. “I definitely want to keep making films that I’m proud of, but that can wait. What’s more important now is that my kids are at an age that I don’t want to miss. And I would hate to look back in 20 years and say, ‘Okay, let’s work as parents,’ and I missed all of that.”

April 2018: Speak with Fashion Australia: Pataky reveals she has had a Thor tattoo since she was a teenager. “Yes, it’s about Thor and I married (the man) who plays Thor!” she says. “It’s shocking how things (turn out) in life. I just liked that (symbol) and the legend that surrounded it was so beautiful and I wanted to keep it.” She also has a “C” on her finger; Hemsworth has an “E” on his.

She also admits that their marriage hasn’t always been a bed of roses. “It was nice at first – when I met him I didn’t know him at all and I grew with him and experienced all his successes and changes and then he just became so great and I shared that with him too… Witnessing every moment and being with him for every success was actually a good thing – we grew together. It’s difficult when you go from being an unknown person to being a very well-known person and experiencing all the changes that brings.”

Pataky said: “We did everything very quickly – I don’t know how we survived as a couple. We got married and a year later we had children. That puts a lot of pressure on a marriage but we’ve coped well because there’s a lot of love between us and we’re very strong personalities but we love each other so much. We make it work… I think our years together have been great. Every marriage has its ups and downs – it’s constant work to have a successful marriage and stay together forever. 2015: The Hemsworths move from Los Angeles to Byron Bay, Australia.

March 2014: Pataky gives birth to the couple’s twin sons, Sasha and Tristan. “When I saw her being a mother, I fell in love with her even more,” the star said in an interview the following year. “Then when we had children, we thought: ‘We’ve done it, this is it.'”

December 2010: They get married on a whim! “To be honest, there was no big plan for it,” Hemsworth said in an interview with Daily Mail. “We were on vacation and said, ‘Why don’t we get married too?’ … Honestly, both of our families were on vacation at the same time, just by chance, and we thought this was a good opportunity to get everyone together, so we just did it.”
