Canada advances to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a draw against Chile

ORLANDO, Florida. — Canada and Chile played out a goalless draw to conclude Group A of the CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 on Saturday at INTER&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Alphonso Davis reached a new milestone with his 50th appearance with the Canadian national team.

Alistair Johnston had a header on goal in the 18th minute, but it was saved by Chilean goalkeeper Gabriel Arias.

Victor Davila had one of Chile’s best attempts in the 21st minute, but the shot went wide.

Gabriel Suázo was sent off in the 27th minute after receiving a second yellow card, as Chile had only ten players on the field for the rest of the match.

Canada came close to taking the lead in the 38th minute when JonathanDavid took a shot towards the goal, but it ultimately went just wide.

Jakob Schäffelburg And Stephen Eustaquio forced two consecutive saves from Arias in the 42nd minute, keeping the game level until halftime.

Maxime Crepeau saved a dangerous shot on goal by Alexis Sanchez in the 74th minute.

Tajon Buchanan almost scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute, but Arias thwarted it.

Crepeau made his most important save in the 90+8 minute, grabbing the ball one-handed to keep the tie and secure his second clean sheet of the tournament.

Canada finished second in the group with four points. The Reds advance to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of Group B on Friday in Arlington, Texas.
