“Civil War” star Kirsten Dunst has described a devastating moment for her character Lee Smith.

The newly released film follows a group of photojournalists who rush to the White House against the backdrop of a second American Civil War.

Towards the end of the film, Dunst’s Lee is killed when she saves her colleague, photojournalist Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), from gunfire outside the White House while Western forces are engaged in a firefight with the President’s troops.

Speaking to Variety about the confusion over which side actually shot Lee, Dunst revealed: “The shot was definitely fired from the President’s Oval Office.”

“I know when I can cross with the soldiers and when I can’t, when they’re shooting,” she continued. “I know the signals and how to read them.”

“You just know when it’s time to move and when it’s time not to. That’s something that Cailee’s character Jessie obviously doesn’t know.”

His star colleague Wagner Moura, who plays Joel, admitted that the death of Dunst’s character affected him emotionally.

“When her character died, it really broke my heart because I was so used to having Kirsten with me every day on this journey,” he said.

“From then on, we had to shoot without her for about an extra week. And I remember telling her that it wouldn’t be the same without her. She really was the heart of the film.”

After its debut last week, “Civil War” set a new record for studio A24, scoring the highest opening weekend to date in the U.S. with a box office take of $25.7 million.
