Large temperature fluctuations in the Detroit metropolitan area before the holidays

The weather on Saturday can be described as hot and humid, with showers and thunderstorms in between, but improvement is on the way.

After heat levels of nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Detroit on Saturday afternoon, cooler and drier air will move into southeast Michigan.

Except for a few showers or thunderstorms, it will be partly cloudy and windy. Lows will be in the low 60s in Detroit, Warren, Livonia, Dearborn, Woodhaven and Monroe and in the mid 50s in Ann Arbor, Flint, Lapeer, Sandusky and Romeo. Winds will be from the west-southwest at 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Sunday

The cooler air will be felt on Sunday. Temperatures will be between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius, about 10 degrees cooler than normal, with mostly cloudy skies. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph. Aside from the gusty winds and cool temperatures, it will be pleasant.

Cloud cover will decrease Sunday evening. Partly cloudy skies will see temperatures fall below 10 degrees in most areas. Temperatures will rise above 7 degrees in some communities, particularly in the Thumb.

Highs in southeast Michigan on Sunday, June 30, will be between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, about 6 degrees colder than normal. (WDIV)

Monday

With a high pressure system moving over southeast Michigan and southwest Ontario on Monday, it will be a mostly sunny and pleasant Canada Day. Highs will be around 24 degrees Celsius. Lows will fall to around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Tuesday

It will get warmer again on Tuesday as a warm front moves across the region. It will be mostly cloudy. Maximum temperatures will be around 27 degrees. Nighttime temperatures will remain mild with lows around 18 degrees.

Wednesday

Hot and humid weather will bring further showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday. Afternoon temperatures in the Detroit metropolitan area will be between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. Lows will be between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Thursday

Thursday, Independence Day, will be warm, partly cloudy and mostly dry. There is a slight chance for a few showers. A cool, dry air mass will retreat as warmer air moves northward across southeast Michigan during the day. Highs will be around 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Lows will be between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hotter weather is expected in July. The Climate Prediction Center forecast shows that temperatures are likely to be higher than normal.
