Beyoncé is the latest celebrity to express her support for Jacob Blake

Beyoncé is the latest celebrity to voice her support for Jacob Blake, a black man who was shot multiple times by police in an incident that reportedly left him paralyzed from the waist down.

A lawyer for Blake, 29, said it would take “a miracle” for him to walk again after he was allegedly shot by police in front of his three children in Wisconsin on Sunday.

The incident was captured on video and reignited anger over police treatment of black people in the United States.

Beyoncé, who has frequently expressed her support for victims of police brutality, shared a photo of Mr Blake and his three sons and wrote: “Sending prayers and thoughts to Jacob Blake and his family.”

The shooting, three months after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, sparked protests in the city of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Ben Crump, Mr Blake’s lawyer, said the bullets severed his client’s spinal cord and shattered his vertebrae.

The names of the officers involved were not disclosed; the Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating.

Rapper Cardi B was one of the celebrities to condemn the shooting. Alongside a video of the incident, she wrote on Instagram: “Wow this is SICK! I can’t believe it! What’s the excuse now?

“SOMETHING HAS TO HAPPEN!”

Singer Demi Lovato urged her followers to contact local politicians to demand action against the police officers involved, adding: “There is no need for this kind of violence.”

Pop star Camila Cabello also called on the police officers involved to take action: “We need change, we need to ARREST these police officers and we need a sign that this government has enough empathy and cares enough about humanity to do something about this.”

And comedian Chelsea Handler said: “Allyship is not a social media trend. Black people have been fighting tirelessly for centuries, and whatever little progress you think we’ve made recently doesn’t carry any weight when you see what continues to happen to black people.”

Mr Blake’s shooting followed months of unrest over the treatment of black people by police. After Mr Floyd’s death sparked worldwide protests in May, other cases of alleged police misconduct resurfaced.

One of the most famous cases was that of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American medical professional who was shot and killed by police in Louisville, Kentucky, in March.

Celebrities are among those calling for the arrest of the officers involved.
