CANADA’S SECOND LARGEST AIRLINE CANCELS 150 FLIGHTS DUE TO STRIKES

VANCOUVER, June 30 (Bernama-Xinhua) — Canada’s second-largest airline, WestJet Group, began canceling a significant number of flights on Saturday due to a strike by aircraft maintenance technicians, Xinhua reported.

The first 150 flight cancellations due to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) strike will affect approximately 20,000 passengers, WestJet said on its website.

AMFA, which represents around 670 WestJet maintenance technicians, began the strike at 4:30 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT) on Friday.

If the strike is not ended or immediate action is not taken, further cancellations are to be expected by Saturday morning, the airline said.

WestJet announced that it was seeking immediate intervention from the Minister of Labour and the Canada Industrial Relations Board as flights of more than 250,000 passengers were scheduled for the long weekend.

Starting Saturday, WestJet will begin parking aircraft at stations across Canada in order to operate a significantly reduced flight schedule by the end of the day, it said.
