A horrific attack in Anne Arundel County destroyed a promising boxing career and a family.

Isaiah Olugbemi, 27, was shot dead Monday night just steps from his home in Odenton.

Olugbemi dreamed of becoming a professional boxer after winning the national Golden Gloves championship in the 203-pound class just last month.

When he wasn’t working out at the gym, he spent time with his 2-year-old son, his family said.

“I just want people to know that my brother was a great father and a great man,” said Daniel Olugbemi. “He just wanted to be a great boxer.”

Isaiah Olugbemi had just returned home from the gym when he was shot on Meadowmist Way.

His sister Rebecca Olugbemi was filming a make-up video at the time and gunshots could be heard in the background.

“He always looked out for everyone and made sure everyone was OK,” she said. “I just want them to know that. And he was just a hard worker. Anything he wanted, he went for it.”

Anne Arundel County police said they arrested 36-year-old Nicholas Giroux on Tuesday and charged him with second-degree murder and premeditated murder.

The family says Giroux was their neighbor and had confronted them before. Anne Arundel County police said they are investigating any previous interactions between the victim and the suspect.

“He meant a lot to a lot of people,” said Brother Abraham Olugbemi. “Because of what happened, people drove here from New York on the same day. It’s just so tragic, so coincidental.”

Giroux is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Thursday morning.

“Honestly, I don’t know what justice would look like,” said Rebecca Olugbemi. “I don’t know if there is anything that could be done to improve the situation.”
