Supermarket reduces rewards program

Tesco is reducing the value of its Clubcard rewards program. Customers can no longer triple the card when they redeem it with program partners.

The Tesco Through the Clubcard rewards partner program, customers can collect points when shopping and exchange them for vouchers for theme parks, restaurants and day trips.

Previously, the points were worth three times their value at the time of exchange, but from June they will only be worth double.

The change will come into effect on June 14.

Tesco said in a statement that the change was made “to ensure we can continue to offer a wide range of rewards that meet the needs of all our Tesco Clubcard members, while keeping prices low for everyone.”

However, some Tesco customers expressed their outrage online about the context of the Cost of living Crisis.

One person tweeted: “An absolute disgrace from Tesco at a time when people are already struggling enough with high prices and costs. I guess it’s more important to think about profits.”

One Tesco customer said this could mean the end of his loyalty: “The main reason I haven’t switched to Aldi or Lidl is because we use our points for family meals etc. Now I’m one step closer to my goal of leaving Tesco!”

Another responded more cautiously: “Card advantages used to be much, MUCH better – but still worthwhile.”

Tesco announced that the validity period of partner rewards will be extended to 12 months, meaning that all points redeemed before June 13 can be used for a year at three times their value.
