Ariana Grande explains why her speaking voice is changing

Ariana Grande speaks onstage during the Universal Pictures and Focus Features presentation during CinemaCon 2024 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on April 10, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ariana Grande’s recent interview with her co-star from “The Boy Is Mine” has fans noticing a drastic change in her otherwise soft voice. On Penn Badley’s Podcrushed Part two episode with the Evil Star Grande has left people very confused or questioning the authenticity of the voice we usually hear.

In Tuesday’s (June 18) episode, Grande begins speaking in a deeper voice, suddenly becoming aware of it and adopting the higher tone we’ve become accustomed to.

A fan posted the moment on TikTok and it has since gone viral, garnering over six million views. The short video is captioned: “The voice change?? (sob emojis).” Grande herself saw the clip and felt the need to set the record straight as fans flooded the comments with theories.

Ariana Grande defends her speaking voice

“Habit (of speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health 🙂 (green t-shirt emoji),” Grande commented. “I often change my vocal pitch (high/low) on purpose depending on how much I sing (sob emoji), I’ve always done it that way, BYE.”

Some fans joked that they Evil The character Glinda needs to “LET HER GO” and “FREE MY GIRL.” Others found it refreshing, commenting, “Her real voice sounds so real, I love it.” Another person hilariously said, “I switch to my customer service voice at work.” And someone else jokingly said, “I accidentally used my other personality around the wrong people.” One fan theorized, “I find her ‘Glinda voice’ is more comfortable for her singing than her ‘normal voice,’ but Glinda is a big part of her too.”

As for Grande’s “habit” of speaking in a high-pitched voice for the past two years, the claim is true. After watching Ari’s TikTok videos from 2022, her normal speaking voice is predominant in her videos. Check out an example of her speaking in a deeper voice below.

Later this year, Grande will star alongside Cynthia Erivo in the film adaptation of the musical Evil. The first part of the two-part film is set to hit theaters on November 27. Watch the trailer below:
