OpenAI postpones launch of Voice Mode feature to July

JAKARTA – OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, announced on Tuesday, June 25, that the launch of its Voice Mode feature will be postponed until July due to technical issues.

The company had originally planned to make this realistic voice conversation experience available to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users by the end of June, but said it took some time to reach the desired launch standard.

“For example, we are improving the model’s ability to detect and reject certain content. We are also working to improve our user experience and prepare our infrastructure to scale to millions of users while maintaining real-time responses,” OpenAI said in a post on social media platform X.

This feature will initially be made available to a small group of users to gather feedback and will be available to all Plus users in the fall, provided safety and reliability checks are met, the company said.

OpenAI is also developing new video and screen sharing features. In May, the company announced the release of a new AI model called GPT-4o that can have realistic voice conversations and interact via text and images, the latest step in staying ahead in the race for dominance in evolving AI technology.

This new audio feature allows users to talk to ChatGPT and receive real-time responses without delays, as well as pause ChatGPT while speaking – both hallmarks of realistic conversations that have been challenging for AI voice assistants.

In addition, ChatGPT’s enhanced voice mode can understand and respond to emotions and non-verbal gestures, bringing us closer to more natural conversations with AI in real time. “Our mission is to bring you this new experience with great care,” OpenAI said.
