Should the Cleveland Cavaliers consider a reunion with Kevin Love?

Should the Cleveland Cavaliers consider a reunion with Kevin Love?

It looks like the Cleveland Cavaliers are ready to return to the field with their four regular players next season. A lineup of Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Evan MobleyAnd Jarrett Allen can easily be one of the top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference and make it deep into the playoffs.

With the starting lineup set, the bench is the one that needs the most change this season. Fortunately, a familiar name on the free agent market could be an option.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Saturday morning that Kevin Love declined his player option and would become a free agent in July. Would it make sense for Cleveland to pursue the Cavaliers’ longtime forward?

Yes, Love would be a reinforcement for the Cavaliers bench.

At this stage of Love’s career, he’s a backup and a veteran player off the bench, which the Cavaliers could benefit from. Last season, he averaged 8.8 points and 6.1 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 34 percent from behind the three-point line.

There could be room for that kind of performance in Cleveland’s rotation. The Cavs ranked 17th in rebounds per game last season (43.8 per game) and currently lack a big backup who can play power forward or center. (Georges Niang is the closest player to that right now.)

But would Love even want to return to the Cavs? Wojnarowski added in his report that he and Miami are “excited to negotiate a new contract” once free agency begins.

Well, Love left the door open with some comments he made earlier last season when he returned to Cleveland as a member of the Heat in December.

“I never rule it out,” Love said. “I have so many great relationships there and people I love. I’m not done with Cleveland. I’m definitely open to going back there and retiring there.”

If Love is interested in returning, there is a place for him on the Cavaliers.
