Fans of Chris Martin were confused by his accent when the singer and his band Coldplay headlined the Glastonbury Festival.

Coldplay break records with their fifth headlining performance at the Worthy Farm festival. As Chris and the group began their set, fans were confused by his obvious American accent.

Fans took to social media to vent their emotions as Chris spoke to the huge crowd during breaks between songs. The set so far has included hits such as “Yellow,” “Viva La Vida” and “Paradise.”

One wrote: “What the hell kind of accent is that Chris Martin? #coldplay #glastonbury #godawful,” and a second added: “When did Chris Martin’s accent turn into the voice of a 1970s accented TV detective? #Glastonbury.”

A third wrote: “What is that weird fake American accent he’s doing? #Glastonbury,” and a fourth wrote: “Chris Martin’s accent is weird when he speaks now. He lives in Malibu California though which is probably why. #Glastonbury.” A fifth wrote: “Chris Martin’s American accent is so bad,” and a sixth wrote: “Why does Chris Martin speak with an American accent?” A seventh wrote: “I don’t care how much you like his music, if he’s doing that ridiculous American accent in a baby voice then Chris Martin needs to be cancelled.”

Ahead of their headlining gig at Glastonbury, Chris spoke to Coldplay about their success over the last few years. When asked about his favourite song and the one he is most proud of, he said: “I have a clear answer for you. I don’t think it’s the best, but for me it’s Fix You. Because it’s so unlikely that that song is from that time. The rest of the album (X&Y) I like, but I don’t think it’s great. Whereas this song… is the best because it almost single-handedly got us through two really difficult years. You could say it’s too soft or something, but… it does exactly what it says on the tin. Even when I sing it, at the end I think, ‘I like that.'”
