A famous tennis star is the narrator of “Never Have I Ever”

  • I have never appeared on Netflix at the end of April.

  • The narrator of the sitcom is tennis star John McEnroe.

  • McEnroe, like Devi, was known for his epic meltdowns throughout his tennis career.

If you missed it, I have never, a series co-created by The office star Mindy Kaling, recently appeared on Netflix. And as it turns out, tennis legend John McEnroe plays a central role in the show as the narrator, the voice heard inside Devi’s head. John McEnroe is, of course, a former tennis pro and champion, as well as a talk show host, who is perhaps best known for his occasional tantrums throughout his career.

Here are more details you may want to know about McEnroe and his involvement in the series.

Who is John McEnroe?

McEnroe is a tennis legend who has committed misconduct on numerous occasions. In 1984, he suffered a complete nervous breakdown at a Grand Prix tournament and got into a dispute with a tennis empire, which led to him being suspended from tennis for three weeks.

Despite all the drama, McEnroe still holds seven Grand Slam singles titles and nine doubles titles. He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999 and was named Player of the Year by the Association of Tennis Professionals in 1981, 1983 and 1984.

It may seem strange that McEnroe is narrating the show.

While it might seem a little confusing why a tennis legend would narrate a sitcom about teenagers in high school, co-creator Mindy Kaling explained her reasoning for casting her. “We had this idea, you know, there’s a certain type of immigrant father and there’s an American icon that he latches onto. And for my dad, that was Tom Brady,” Kaling said. “We just thought it would be great to have an Indian father try to relate to his Indian-American daughter through the lens of this American that he trusts and thinks is great.”

McEnroe also makes a cameo appearance in the season finale.

In the last episode, Devi chats with the tennis star on the beach (who at least has a surfboard with him). “I didn’t expect this,” he said Weekly entertainment. “(Kaling) said, ‘We’d love for you to do a cameo.’ I thought, ‘Okay, that would be cool. Does that make sense?'” Yes, McEnroe. Your scene made perfect sense. (You’ll have to watch the show to understand what he’s talking about.)

McEnroe would likely return for another season.

If the series is picked up for a second season, McEnroe has already expressed interest in returning as narrator. “I know Mindy is proud of it and people are responding to it,” he told EW. “I get people I haven’t heard from in years saying, ‘I saw you in I have never‘,’ which was nice.
