Who is Dman in Netflix’s Tell Them You Love Me?

Fans are fascinated and horrified by the details of what happened to Derrick Johnson, but many don’t know who “Dman” is, even though he is mentioned in the new Netflix series. Tell them you love me Documentary.

Tell them you love me is a new true crime documentary that explains what happened to Derrick Johnson, who suffers from cerebral palsy and cannot walk or speak.

Who is “Dman” in “Tell Them You Love Me”?

In several places in Tell them you love meFormer Rutgers University-Newark professor Anna Stubblefield (who was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of Derrick Johnson) often uses the name “Dman.”

“Dman” is the nickname Stubblefield gave Derrick Johnson when he was in her care and was learning communication skills.

In the documentary, Stubblefield explained how the nickname came about.

Stubblefield claimed in Tell them you love me that she asked Derrick Johnson what he “would like to be called” when she taught him to communicate by typing, and that “he typed DMAN:”

“I said, ‘You know what, I remember I never asked you what you like to be called. Your brother told me your name is Derrick. When you came in, I called you Derrick. Tell me, what should I call you?’ And he typed DMAN.”

The former professor then said that Derrick’s mother Daisy came in and explained that Derrick “had this really great teacher” earlier in life “who got him out of his wheelchair and made him walk” and that you “formerly called (Derrick) Dman:”

“And I looked at it and it didn’t look like any name I recognized. Daisy (Johnson) came back into the room at that moment and I said, ‘He typed DMAN, does that mean anything to you?’ She said, ‘Oh, he had this really great teacher when he was 13 who always called him Dman.’ That was the teacher who got him out of the wheelchair and taught him to walk.”

Stubblefield then said she asked Derrick if his mother was right and claimed he confirmed it. “so from then on she called him Dman:”

“So I asked, ‘Is she right?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ So from then on I called him Dman. That was a very important moment. Being able to tell people what you want to be called is this important emotional aspect of life that we take away from people when they can’t speak.”

Stubblefield still refers to Derrick as Dman throughout the show Tell them you love mewhich is quite disturbing considering that Derrick’s mother testified that Derrick would not have been able to communicate through typing without Stubblefield’s manipulation.
