Charlie Woods qualifies for US Junior Amateur in Oakland Hills

Charlie Woods will compete at Oakland Hills Country Club next month.

Woods shot 71 (1-under par) in a U.S. Junior Amateur Championship qualifier at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Florida on Wednesday. Woods, the 15-year-old son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, won the qualifier by one stroke and will compete in the tournament on the North and restored South courses of Oakland Hills Country Club from July 22-27.

The 264-player field, which consists of the best golfers under the age of 19, will play two rounds of stroke play on both courses before the best 64 compete for the championship in match play on the South Course. The winner will receive a free ticket to the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

There are already 78 players who have received exemptions as the best amateur golfers in the world, including one who will visit metro Detroit next week: 15-year-old Miles Russell, who will receive a sponsor exemption for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. The rest of the 264-player field will be filled out by top finishers in qualifying rounds, like Woods, who finished strong with three birdies between holes 13 and 16 to win after starting the back nine with a bogey and a double bogey.

WHAT CHARLIE EXPERIENCES: I played the newly restored South Course at Oakland Hills. Here is my review.

“I look forward to seeing the next generation of future golf stars at Oakland Hills in July, competing for the most coveted championship in junior golf,” Jeff Judge, chairman of the Junior Amateur and former president of Oakland Hills, said Tuesday before listing some of the notable exceptions like Russell.

Woods will look to etch his name into the storied history of the 108-year-old golf course, which will continue to produce new champions for years to come. The Junior Amateur will be the first of eight USGA championships at Oakland Hills from 2024 to 2051, including four U.S. Opens.

“It started 100 years ago, but our new partnership and then seven more championships and hopefully more,” said Rob Doone, USGA Junior Amateur director, of Oakland Hills’ relationship with golf’s governing body. “The Junior Amateur has become a pretty amazing path to greatness. Numerous former champions have gone on to do incredible things.”

Woods family history at Oakland Hills Country Club

Charlie will climb the slopes of the Oakland Hills 20 years after his father was a member of the US Ryder Cup team that lost there to Europe. Woods played with Phil Mickelson in the pair’s only partnership in a long Ryder Cup history, but lost both matches they played against Colin Montgomerie and Padraig Harrington, then against Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood.

MONSTER READY TO ROAR: Oakland Hills Country Club returns to tournament victory with US Junior Amateur

Tiger’s other tournament in Bloomfield Township was the 1996 U.S. Open, where he shot 294 (76-69-77-72) over four days in his final U.S. Open as an amateur, just months after winning a U.S. Amateur tournament for the third year in a row, which set a new record. Tiger, then 20, briefly led in the first round but played the final five holes of the South Course nine over par.

He missed the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills after undergoing knee surgery that ended his season following his epic playoff victory at the US Open.

Tiger, a 15-time major winner, won six consecutive USGA championships: the Junior Amateur (1991–1993) and the US Amateur (1994–1996).
