Cup qualifying order for Nashville
Daytona Motor Mouths: Know Your Grohl
This week in a packed episode: Michael McDowell vs. Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson vs. Spotter vs. Denny Hamlin and… Taylor Swift vs. Dave Grohl?
Even though there were plenty of overtaking maneuvers and position battles at last year’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway, starting position is always crucial.
That led to Saturday, when qualifying for Sunday’s Ally 400 took place in the heat of the day on the 0.70-mile track. Denny Hamlin claimed the coveted No. 1 starting spot and choice of pit road, pulling away from the field with a lap of 29.859 seconds. Josh Berry will also start on the front row, with Christopher Bell starting third, Kyle Larson fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth.
Justin Haley, driver of the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing Ford, made an illegal adjustment after inspection and will be relegated to the back of the field, serve a drive-through penalty on pit road on Sunday and will also be without his crew chief.
Chevrolet has three wins in as many Cup Series races at Nashville, with Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson and Ross Chastain each taking one win. Larson was at the top of the odds on Saturday.
Coverage of Sunday’s Ally 400 begins at 3:30 p.m.
