E-Day could bring back Tai Kaliso and RAAM

Highlights

  • Since Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel, it offers the opportunity to explore the origins of legendary characters and weapons.
  • The Chainsaw Lancer’s origins can be traced back to the character Kaliso, opening up the possibility of his return if the Coalition wants to show the first use of a Lancer.
  • RAAM’s role in the E-Day invasion is also interesting, as it allows him a possible cameo appearance in the game.

The developers of Coalition hinted at storylines and characters that will appear in Gears of War: E-Day in a recent article from Windows Central. Creative Director Matt Searcy and Brand Director Nicole Fawcette could not reveal any explicit details about what players can expect in E-Tagbut noted that players will witness the origins of many series icons, tropes, and relationships. Some of these include references to the creation of the signature chainsaw spearman and an appearance by Locust High General RAAM. Both of these characters could offer immense story and gameplay potential in Gears of War: E-Dayalongside the appearance of another classic character: Tai Kaliso.

Gears of War: E-Day could use a Locust-type trio to be truly terrifying

Given the new emphasis on horror in Gears of War: E-Day, the Coalition could use three classic Locust types to give the game a truly terrifying touch.

The origins of the Chainsaw Lancer

Most of Sera’s wars, particularly the Pendulum Wars between the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) and the Union of Independent Republics (UIR), were fought with what became known as the Retro Lancer. Unlike the Chainsaw Lancer, the Retro Lancer is equipped with a large, knife-sized bayonet designed to impale enemies as one charges at them. However, due to the Locusts’ thick hide and bones, the Retro Lancer proved ineffective in fighting the Locusts, especially in close combat. Often, the Retro Lancer’s blades would bounce off the Locusts’ thick hide or break the rifle off entirely. Despite these shortcomings, the Retro Lancer was used by many soldiers, civilians, and Locusts during the Locust War and beyond.

In the 2009 book Gears of War: Jacinto’s RemnantsIn the third installment in the Chainsaw Lancer series, the in-universe origins of the Chainsaw Lancer were first revealed. During the Second Battle of the COG City of Jannermont, set one year after Emergence Day, Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santaigo, and Tai Kaliso attempted to save civilians from a Locust attack. A Locust attempted to kill Fenix after his Retro Lancer was jammed, but was quickly torn apart by Kaliso with a nearby chainsaw. Inspired by the saw’s effectiveness against the Locust, Fenix suggested to his father, Adam Fenix, that they upgrade the Lancer, and this led to the creation of the Lancer Mark Two, also known as the Chainsaw Lancer. The Chainsaw Lancer became the standard weapon of COG soldiers from then on.

A Tai Kaliso cameo in E-Day

Although Kaliso’s appearance, reminiscent of the chainsaw lance fighter, took place a year after Emergence Day, he could still have a brief appearance in Gears of War: E-Day. Kaliso, Fenix and Santiago all fought together during the Pendulum Wars, so Kaliso was able to help strengthen the developing friendship between Fenix and Santiago in E-Tag. Fawcette confirmed that players would see how the Chainsaw Lancer was made E-TagSo

The coalition could retroactively make Kaliso’s chainsaw rescue of Fenix so that it E-Tag. Chainsaws could then become unique close combat weapons that only exist in E-Tag. Additionally, they could make the game’s final battle with the Chainsaw Lancer an epic conclusion.

Although they do not appear canonically until a year after the start of the Locust War, chainsaw spearmen are in
Gears of War: Verdict
which takes place just two months after Emergence Day.

RAAM’s E-Day Massacre

General RAAM participated in the Locust invasion of the surface on Emergence Day and directly led the first Battle of Jannermont. While leading the Battle of Jannermont on the ground, he helped coordinate the entire invasion of the COG and UIR nations worldwide. It is estimated that 25% of all people on Sera were killed. E-Tag alone. Players may know RAAM from using flying Kryll creatures to destroy his enemies, but canonically RAAM did not begin using Kryll in this way until many years after the war began. Instead, RAAM used his giant serrated sword to impale COG soldiers and lift them into the air, or his hand-held Troika heavy machine gun to instantly tear enemies to pieces.

It is still unknown which city will serve as the setting E-TagRAAM could appear in the game if it is set in Jannermont. Seacry and Fawcette have not confirmed RAAM’s appearance in the game, but they did grin at each other when RAAM was mentioned, so it’s possible he has at least a cameo. If RAAM only appears as a cameo, he could appear at the beginning of the game and lead the Locust invasion force. However, if RAAM takes a more active role in Gears of War: E-DayHe could serve as the final boss, while the first introduction of the Lancer chainsaw could show that the Locust can be defeated and are not the unstoppable force they initially appear to be.
