Due to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association’s (AMFA) decision to strike despite a ministerial arbitration mandate, WestJet has announced a further 235 flight cancellations. Until the union’s strike is ended or immediate action is taken, WestJet will be forced to continue cancelling flights to maintain the stability of its remaining operations.

“This situation is devastating. The union’s irrational actions are single-handedly causing irreparable harm to our guests, who are missing wedding celebrations, important medical appointments, family reunions and long-awaited vacations, while thousands of Canadians are left without support or a flight home,” says Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “We are using all options for intervention and working around the clock to maintain a stable network while reducing our flights in a safe and controlled manner.”

WestJet will continue to park aircraft at stations across Canada through Saturday, June 29, but significant disruption is expected through the end of the day.

Summary of the entire cancellation:

Thursday, June 27 – Friday, June 28, 2024:

  • Approximately 25 cancellations
  • Around 3,300 guests affected

Friday, June 28:

  • Around 150 rejections
  • About 20,000 guests affected

Saturday, June 29:

  • Around 235 cancellations
  • About 33,000 guests affected
